海外でも評判だという様子を伝える日本の記事を英語化して海外に伝える

 2015年3月6日~8日にアメリカ・ボストンで開催されていたPAX EAST 2015。今年もさまざまな話題が飛び交い、盛況のうちに終了したが、それからほどなくしてファミ通.com編集部宛に、投稿された記事に対する問い合わせがアクセスゲームズからあった。

 聞けば、ファミ通.comに掲載した“『D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die』のPC版を発見! そしてSWERYの海外人気は本物だ【PAX EAST 2015】”という『D4』と同社のゲームデザイナーSWERY氏に関する記事を、ぜひ海外に紹介したいという。その後の経緯はいろいろあるものの、アクセスゲームズによって英文に翻訳された内容を紹介するという、なんとも複雑だがユニークな試みと相成った。

Indie, Alternative, and Cult

Indie... The term has come to represent “creative” pieces of work, and tends to be confused with “alternative.” There may be a lot of games that are both indie and alternative, but a game that’s “indie” is capitally independent. It doesn’t necessarily require alternative sensibilities that are separate from the mainstream.

The reverse is also true. Basically, what I’m trying to say is... Access Games, which belongs to the Kaga Electronics Group, isn’t entirely “indie,” but there’s no denying the fact that their director, SWERY, is “alternative.”

Whether you look at Deadly Premonition or D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die, the passion of those who “get it” is almost completely indecipherable to normal people. But that’s probably how it should be. These games contain a certain alternative charm that surpasses mundane logic, and permanently snatches the hearts of a certain type of people. That’s what we call “cult.” And so, last week at GDC in San Francisco and PAX EAST in Boston, SWERY descended as one of Japan’s new cult creators.

I’ve played both Deadly Premonition and D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die, and I think I’ve gained some kind of understanding of their charming, albeit strange grooves. But even if the games didn’t make sense to some, anyone could watch overwhelming passion of the fans who swarmed SWERY at GDC and PAX and realize that something had transcended the ocean and struck them deep in their hearts. “You’re SWERY, right? Please give me an autograph! Can I take a picture with you? Deadly Premonition is the best!” “I couldn’t play D4 because I don’t have an Xbox One. Please put it out on PC!”

I’m not exaggerating any of this. As I stood talking with SWERY at PAX EAST, there was never a moment when someone didn’t come and try to interrupt us. Ignoring the reporters, these fans ran up to try and get autographs and snapshots with him. (And he gave them priority.) This isn’t some pandering story about how D4, which was set in Boston, was met with a warm welcome by the Bostonians at PAX EAST. This is serious business. PAX is an event that gathers hardcore gamers from all over the US, and they kept coming up to SWERY.

Naturally, these fans were overjoyed to see the PC demo version of D4. It’s unsure whether this will actually be released or not, but they seem to have done a good job of replacing the unique Kinect gestures with mouse controls.

It’s a bit removed from the original goal of “mentally synchronizing the player with the character through gesture controls,” but in the fast-paced QTEs, there still appeared to be some possibility for synchronization with the rhythm of the movements.

When I went to get coverage on the Deadly Premonition panel at GDC 2011, I was touched by how passionate the fans were, so I titled my article: “Tomorrow’s new cult game?” Now, 4 years later, I can see that my prediction has come true. If the PC version of D4 is released and creates even more fans, what in the world will come next?

Me: SWERY, are you really going to release a PC version? SWERY: (Blindly staring into space...)
