本作は2010年にマイクロソフトからXbox 360で発売されたサイコスリラーアクションのPC版。とある田舎町ブライトフォールズを訪れた小説家アラン・ウェイクを襲う奇妙な体験を描く。基本テーマは“光と闇の戦い”。戦闘面でも、闇に乗っ取られた人々やモノに、光を当てて弱体化させながら切り抜けていくことになる。
ストーリーは海外ドラマ仕立てのエピソード制を採用しており、区切りごとに謎が謎を呼ぶ息をつかせぬ展開がプレイヤーを待っている。なお本編クリアー後のエピソードとして、“The Signal”と“The Writer”という2本のDLC（ダウンロードコンテンツ）と、サウンドトラックCDが同梱されている。
